The Eight Computational Approaches for Cancer workshop was an opportunity to bring together many diverse perspectives, all using computational approaches to improve cancer research or care. The featured speaker was Amber Simpson from Queens University in Canada. The session included a panel discussion on using AI to accelerate drug discovery. Details for the workshop can be found here.

CAFCW21 – Location: Saint Louis, Missouri + Hybrid
The Computational Approaches for Cancer workshop in 2021 was an exciting opportunity to return some in-person aspects of the workshop. The special topic for that year was on Digital Twins and the featured speaker was Graham Johnson from the Allen Cell Institute, sharing the power of visualization to provide insight into cellular behavior. A workshop overview is available here.

CAFCW20 – Location: Virtual as part of SC20 (during the COVID Pandemic)
CAFCW20 was held virtually has a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The virtual attendance proved a fantastic opportunity to bring an even broader community together. NCI Director Ned Sharpless provided the invited presentation. CAFCW20 also saw the introduction of a virtual poster session as part of the program. Details of the program can be found here.

CAFCW19 – Location: Denver, Colorado
CAFCW19 was the fifth computational approaches for cancer workshop and a full day. With the rapid emergence of AI, the special topic for the workshop focused on the use of AI in drug discovery and the emergence of digital twins for cancer. Keynote presentation was given by Dr. Warren Kibbe. SC19 also saw the recognition of ‘SC19 Best Paper’ by the NCI-DOE team working on MuMMI as a multiscale modeling framework applied to study the role of the Ras protein in cancer.

CAFCW18 – Location: Dallas, Texas
The workshop ran for a full day with a focus on clinical applications. The morning keynote was delivered by Ketan Paranjape (Roche – Diagnostic Information Solutions) and the afternoon keynote by Paul Scheet (MD Anderson Cancer Center). The detailed program can be found here.

CAFCW17 – Location : Denver, Colorado
CAFCW17 saw the development of proceedings from the workshop published in BMC Bioinformatics, Volume 19, Issue 18 supplement. Shannon Hughes from the NCI Division of Cancer Biology was the invited presenter. Among the many areas highlighted in the program were early reports from the new collaboration between the NCI and the DOE. The acronym CAFCW began to be used for the workshop.

CAFCW16 – Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
SC16 provided an opportunity for attendees of the second Computational Approaches for Cancer Workshop to delve deeper into topics of precision oncology. The invited presenter was Dr. Julie Klemm from NCI Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT). Additional presentations were given on early plans for the NCI-DOE collaboration Joint Design of Advanced Computing Solutions for Cancer (JDACS4C) and view on the future of AI. SC16 also featured a plenary panel on precision medicine. See the video here.

CAFCW15 – Location: Austin, Texas
2015 saw the inaugural Computational Approaches for Cancer Workshop, created to bring those in the HPC and cancer communities together with an interest in using HPC to impact cancer. The workshop featured invited presentations, posters and an announcement of the anticipated collaboration between the NCI and the Department of Energy. The founding organizing committee was Patricia Kovatch, Tom Barr, and Eric Stahlberg.
